SABIK, an international manufacturer of visual aids for navigation sees that the health and wellbeing of its personnel is very important. There are people in different ages working in different kind of tasks in the company, such as in physical work in the production and sitting in front of a computer in the office. Therefore Sabik decided already during the year 2013 to invest more in the wellbeing of its workers and started an exercise campaign with the help of Heia Heia.

Sabik has now for the third time organised ”HeiaHeia Sabik! 1000 hours exercise = 1000 euros to the charity” campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to raise together 1000 hours of exercise in an agreed time and give 1€ from every hour to a charity agreed together with all the participants. As the most popular form of sport, Sabik’s employees in Finland have been walking a lot with or without a dog. Also cycling, running and gym have been very popular. Also many forms of functional training were practised such as forestry and gardening. The staff of Sabik tried new exercise forms together as well such as kicksparking.

This time Sabik challenged also its Canadian partner to take part into this exercise challenge. The duration of the playful competition between teams Sabik Beacons and Carmaniacs was agreed for two months. The team Sabik Beacons included Finnish office but also Sabik‘s subsidiaries in Germany, England, Singapore and the representative office in Russia. The competition started in 1st February and the result of 1100 hours was reached by the end of competition 31st March.

The 1100€ raised by Sabik Beacons was donated to the Porvoo shelter for women and children. The amount raised was given to the Porvoo shelter on Tuesday 28th April 2015 with festivities. Managing Director Lars Mansner gave the check with a lovely bouquet of flowers and said: ”The Sabik Heia Heia campaign is now a tradition already and with this campaign everyone wins. We at Sabik get exercise and well-being employees and the charity we chose this time, Porvoo shelter receives money to fund their operations.”

At the event in the Porvoo shelter was present Kirsi Nurme and Nina Jääskeläinen. The recipients told that the money is really needed to the shelter where there are women, children and men who have suffered from violent relationships and circumstances. „With donations we can fund trips to zoo and amusement park, give birthday presents to the children or e.g. pay a visit to the hairdresser. All this is extra, which we cannot do with the funding from the city but however very important to our customers“, tells Kirsi Nurme, Social Worker at Porvoo shelter. „For example when we asked from our customers about trips to hairdressers, nine out of ten said that they haven’t been able to visit one in the last five years.“ At the end the staff of Porvoo shelter thanked for the donation and sent their best wishes to the whole Sabik personnel and wished them good luck with their exercise efforts.

Even if this campaign is over, exercising doesn’t stop and the Sabik employees have been continuing their activities. Sabik would also like to challenge other Porvoo based companies to take care further for their personnel’s wellbeing. There are several suitable exercise places in the region to fulfil the exercise needs of companies of different sizes.
